Introducing 58Miles showcase photographer Kavita Taneja from Haryana
Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got started in photography?
By qualification , I have a Master's degree in Mathematics.
It all began when I was a college student in Delhi, exploring different cafes and cuisines. I loved capturing the ambiance and food, so I started an Instagram page as a food blogger, Sharing pictures and reviews of cafes.
When the lockdown happened, I couldn't go out exploring, so I shifted my focus to photographing homemade food. Styling and shooting dishes became my new hobby. I spent hours perfecting each shot. That's when I realized my true love was in the photography itself, not just the food.
Soon, I got opportunities to work with brands, and my work expanded beyond food. I started photographing different products like skincare and beauty products, and that's how I transitioned into product photography professionally.
What inspires your photography, and how do you choose your subjects or themes?
I'm really drawn to textures right now. Things like lipsticks are perfect for capturing that. The theme usually comes from the product itself. I love playing with colors, so I often pick backgrounds that complement the product's color.
When I work with brands, the theme has to match their vibe. I look at what they stand for and try to create pictures that tell their story.
What has been your most memorable photography project or shoot, or any inspiring story around it, and why?
My most memorable project has to be my very first paid shoot – for a food brand! It was special because they took a chance on a newbie like me, especially for a product launch. They were incredibly supportive and patient throughout the process.
That project truly kickstarted my journey as a product photographer. It taught me so much about collaborating with a team, understanding client needs, and working within a specific theme. Even though I was a bit nervous, seeing my work used for their launch campaign was incredibly rewarding. It was a turning point that showed me the potential of where my photography could take me.
What is your photography kit ? or we would say, what is in your camera bag?
I have a canon 200D mark ii, a 18-55mm kit lens and a 50 mm prime lens.
To light my products, I rely on continuous lighting which is Digitek DCL 150W along with a reflector.
What advice would you give to photographers who are just starting out and looking to make a name for themselves?
1.Master Light, it's your most powerful tool. Experiment with different light sources and angles..
2. Don't Wait for the perfect shot.
Start shooting, learn from mistakes, and Use social media platforms to showcase your work
3.Consistent practice is key. Experiment with different subjects, styles, and techniques.
4. Grab your camera and start creating. The best way to learn is by doing.
