Introducing 58Miles showcase photographer Henry Roy Zachariah from Bangalore

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got started in photography?

I work professionally as a banker, but my true passion lies in portrait and fashion photography. My journey into photography began during my school days. At first, I was fascinated by capturing wildlife and street scenes, drawn to the natural beauty and dynamic moments of everyday life. Over time, my interests shifted, and I became increasingly captivated by photographing people. This led me to explore portrait and fashion photography, where I could combine my love for storytelling with a keen eye for detail and style. Balancing my career in banking with my creative pursuits has been incredibly fulfilling, allowing me to express myself artistically while maintaining my professional role.

What inspires your photography, and how do you choose your subjects or themes?

My photography is inspired by the beauty and complexity of human emotions and stories. I started capturing street scenes, which taught me to appreciate the raw, unfiltered moments of life. This foundation has deeply influenced my current focus on portrait and fashion photography. I choose my subjects based on their unique personalities and the stories they carry. Fashion photography, in particular, allows me to blend creativity with elegance, creating images that are not just visually appealing but also emotionally resonant. Each photoshoot is an opportunity to connect with my subjects, bringing out their individuality and creating art that reflects both their essence and my vision.

What has been your most memorable photography project or shoot, or any inspiring story around it, and why?

One of my most memorable photography projects was a series of single light portraits. This technique is challenging yet incredibly rewarding, as it requires meticulous attention to detail and creative use of shadows and highlights to bring out the subject's character. One shoot that stands out was with a dancer who wanted to capture the elegance and emotion of her body scapes. Using a single light source, I was able to create dramatic contrasts that highlighted her grace and strength. The shoot was inspiring because it pushed me to experiment with angles and lighting in new ways, ultimately producing images that were both powerful and evocative. Each single light portrait session reaffirms my passion for this technique, as it continuously inspires me to explore and innovate.

What is your photography kit ? or we would say, what is in your camera bag?

In my camera bag, I use Canon gear. My go-to lenses are the 85mm and 35mm, which are perfect for capturing sharp, detailed portraits and wider, more contextual shots, respectively. Alongside these lenses, I carry a few flashlights and live lights to ensure I have the flexibility to adapt to different lighting conditions and achieve the precise look I envision for each shoot. All of this equipment fits in a normal backpack which I use from a while, making it easy for me to carry around and be ready for any spontaneous photography opportunities

What advice would you give to photographers who are just starting out and looking to make a name for themselves?

My advice to photographers who are just starting out and looking to make a name for themselves is to focus on finding your unique voice and style. In portrait and fashion photography, it's crucial to understand and connect with your subjects, bringing out their true essence in your photos. Experiment with different techniques, like single light setups, to challenge yourself and expand your skills. Consistency and dedication are key, so keep practicing and refining your craft. Additionally, building a strong portfolio and actively sharing your work on social media and photography communities can help you gain exposure. Networking with other photographers and industry professionals can also open doors to new opportunities. Most importantly, stay passionate and never stop learning. Every shoot is a chance to grow and create something extraordinary.
