Introducing 58Miles showcase photographer, Goutam Maiti from Calcutta
Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got started in photography?
I am a senior professional in an Indian Edutech Business based in Kolkata, and alongside my career, I have dedicated the past 9 years to practicing visual storytelling as a documentary and street photographer. My focus lies in capturing the lives of people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, aiming to portray their intimate moments and the vibrant essence of street life.
I got into street photography around 2016-17. Before that, I experimented with various styles, from wildlife to landscape photography. However, it wasn't until I focused on street and daily life photography that I found true satisfaction. Capturing slices of life, those never-repeating moments, successes, and misses made me realize this was what I was looking for.
What inspires your photography, and how do you choose your subjects or themes?
I believe a photograph should tell a story, at least allowing the viewer to interpret it in their own way. My photos aim to include elements of interest, surprise, contrasts, similarities, and idiosyncrasies. Anything that teaches me something new or excites me, whether it's a superb composition, use of juxtaposition, decisive moment, amazing layers, or great storytelling, inspires my work.
What has been your most memorable photography project or shoot, or any inspiring story around it, and why?
In March 2023, the DOTSO (Day On the Streets Of) Kolkata event brought together over 40 photographers from Kolkata and abroad to explore and capture the streets of the city over a 24-hour period. Despite challenging weather conditions, we persevered to capture the moments and stories of Kolkata. As one of the local photographers, it was a memorable experience that pushed my limits and allowed me to showcase the city through my lenses.
What is your photography kit? Or we would say, what is in your camera bag?
I currently use a Fujifilm XT4 camera with three lens combinations: a 10mm-24mm f4, a 16mm f2.4 prime, and an all-purpose 16mm-80mm f4 lens. I also use a Canon 80D, an old companion with a variety of lens combos. Lastly, my all-time companion, the iPhone 15 Pro Max, has been a savior in many situations and has provided me with numerous cherished images.
What advice would you give to photographers who are just starting out and looking to make a name for themselves?
New photographers should master the basics of exposure, composition, lighting, and color theory, and practice regularly to hone their skills. Building a strong and diverse portfolio is crucial, as is finding a niche and developing a unique style. Networking and collaborating with other photographers and creatives can expand your portfolio and build valuable connections. Promote your work through a website and social media, engaging with your audience to increase visibility. Understanding the business aspects of photography, such as pricing and marketing, is essential. Seek feedback through forums and workshops, stay inspired by following admired photographers, and continuously learn new techniques. Patience and persistence are key, as building a reputation takes time and dedication.
