Introducing 58Miles showcase photographer Devaraj Devann from kerala
Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got started in photography?
About seven years ago, I embarked on my journey as a street photographer from Kerala. It all started with a simple desire to travel and explore, and I took my camera along for the ride, even though I had no formal knowledge of photography basics. As I traveled, I found myself drawn to capturing the essence of the places I visited and the people I encountered. Without any formal training, I just followed my instincts, taking countless pictures along the way. Some of these photos made their way to social media, where they quickly garnered a lot of attention and positive feedback from viewers. The response was overwhelming and unexpected, and it became the driving force behind my decision to pursue photography as a career. The journey that began with a camera and a curiosity for the world around me has since evolved into a deep passion for street photography.
What inspires your photography, and how do you choose your subjects or themes?
I'm always inspired by visuals and stories. In the streets, I've met many people, each with their own unique stories. The moments when they meet my camera are always beautiful. When a visual or story touches my heart, my finger instinctively touches the shutter button, capturing the essence of that moment.
What has been your most memorable photography project or shoot, or any inspiring story around it, and why?
On the street, countless moments unfold around you, each with the potential to be something special. Capturing a beautiful moment makes it truly memorable. It’s essential to keep your mind calm and patiently wait for that exact moment to reveal itself before you press the shutter.
What is your photography kit ? or we would say, what is in your camera bag?
I’ve always relied on my camera’s kit lens and my phone for shooting, especially when I’m out on the streets. In street photography, the equipment you use isn’t as important as the moments you’re trying to capture. It’s easy to get caught up in the technical aspects or worry about having the latest gear, but I’ve learned that what truly matters is your ability to focus on the moment unfolding in front of you. The connection with your subject, the story you’re telling, and the emotions you’re capturing far outweigh any concerns about your equipment. Concentrate on the scene, and let your intuition guide you to capture something truly special.
What advice would you give to photographers who are just starting out and looking to make a name for themselves?
Always strive to be original. Focus on creating your own unique visuals and stories. Avoid imitating others; instead, let your personal perspective and creativity shine through in your work. Authenticity is key to making your photography truly stand out.
