Introducing 58Miles showcase photographer Adarsh Vikram from New Delhi
Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got started in photography?
My name is Adarsh Vikram, and I am essentially a storyteller. I have been closely observing nature, people, and my surroundings for many years, which naturally led me to photography. My journey in photography began in 2010, during a college tour when I first felt the urge to capture the beauty of nature and my environment.
I hold both a bachelor's and a master's degree in Fine Art with a specialization in Painting from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. This academic background significantly enhances my perception and approach to photography, allowing me to blend artistic principles with photographic techniques.
As a sensitive individual and a proud Indian, I am deeply inspired by my culture. Indian culture, with its rich tapestry of traditions, spiritual beliefs, festivals, arts, and languages, profoundly influences my work. It embodies the values, social norms, and artistic expressions that define the people of India. Growing up in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, I have always been surrounded by this vibrant cultural heritage, which continues to shape my storytelling through photography.
What inspires your photography, and how do you choose your subjects or themes?
My photography is deeply inspired by nature and Indian culture. Since the beginning, I have been captivated by the beauty of the natural world, and this fascination significantly influences my work. I am particularly drawn to capturing the essence of Indian culture, with its rich traditions, vibrant festivals, and diverse artistic expressions.
I also find great inspiration in the works of renowned Indian photographers S. Paul and Raghu Rai. Their ability to convey powerful stories through their lenses motivates me to explore and capture the world around me with a similar depth of understanding and creativity.
When it comes to choosing subjects or themes, I am especially passionate about travel photography and documenting rural life. I enjoy capturing the unique activities, daily routines, and cultural practices of different places, which reflect the true essence of their communities. Through my lens, I aim to tell compelling stories that highlight the beauty and complexity of both nature and human life.
What has been your most memorable photography project or shoot, or any inspiring story around it, and why?
As a photographer, I am constantly surrounded by inspiration and opportunities to learn something new. However, a few projects stand out as particularly memorable and inspiring. One such project involved a trip to shoot the Taj Mahal. On a winter morning, I captured the beauty of a frog amidst the early morning mist, which turned out to be a unique and evocative image for me. This experience reinforced my belief that sometimes, the most unexpected subjects can create the most captivating photographs.
Another unforgettable experience occurred after the COVID-19 pandemic. I embarked on a trek to Tungnath and Chandrashila, starting early in the night at 2:00 am to capture the sunrise. The trek was solitary and filled with moments of fear, as there was no one else on the path. However, reaching the summit and witnessing the breathtaking view from Chandrashila Top made it all worthwhile. The serene beauty of the sunrise and the sense of accomplishment from overcoming my fears added a profound dimension to this photographic journey.
These experiences highlight the essence of photography for me: the blend of adventure, learning, and the constant pursuit of capturing extraordinary moments in ordinary settings.
What is your photography kit ? or we would say, what is in your camera bag?
In my photography kit, I always carry a carefully selected set of essential items to ensure I am prepared for any shooting scenario. My primary camera is the Sony A7R III, which I pair with the versatile G Master 24-105mm lens. This combination allows me to capture a wide range of subjects, from detailed close-ups to expansive landscapes.
To maintain the quality of my equipment, I always have a lens cleaning kit on hand. This ensures that my lenses are free from dust and smudges, allowing for the best possible image quality. Additionally, I carry extra batteries and memory cards to ensure I never miss a shot due to power or storage constraints.
Staying hydrated is crucial, especially during long shoots or outdoor adventures, so I always have a water bottle with me. I also bring along a portable music speaker, as listening to music helps me stay inspired and focused while shooting.
These essentials in my camera bag help me stay prepared, comfortable, and creative, enabling me to capture the best possible photographs in any situation.
What advice would you give to photographers who are just starting out and looking to make a name for themselves?
To photographers who are just starting out and looking to make a name for themselves, my advice is to be patient and take your time to develop your unique style. It's natural to be inspired by other artists, but it's important not to copy their work. Instead, focus on understanding what kind of photography truly resonates with you and invest time in honing your skills in that area.
Take the time to learn from the work of established artists, but use their work as a source of inspiration rather than a template to replicate. Your individuality and unique perspective are what will set you apart in the crowded field of photography. Aim to create work that is distinctively yours.
Avoid rushing the process. Success in photography, as in any art form, requires dedication, hard work, and time. Be persistent, practice regularly, and continuously strive to improve your craft. In due time, your efforts will pay off, and you will achieve your goals. Remember, the journey is as important as the destination, so embrace every learning experience along the way.
