Introducing 58Miles showcase photographer Simran Gauba from Hyderabad
Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got started in photography?
So, I used to be a fashion technology student at the National Institute Of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Delhi from where I dropped out in the year 2020 to pursue my photography career. I used to be a photography enthusiast back in school but was not able to focus on it due to my studies. I rediscovered my passion back in 2018 when I started exploring my city, Delhi all by myself. I started with mobile phone photography and saved from my pocket money to invest in my first DSLR a year later.
What inspires your photography, and how do you choose your subjects or themes?
My photography is driven by the desire to tell stories. I believe in the power of finding extraordinary stories in everyday ordinary moments. One of the genres of photography that I enjoy the most while it still challenges me is street photography and my subjects involve common people, street animals and everyday life objects that find their place in all these stories. I also love monuments and heritage photography at the hidden gems in the city.
What has been your most memorable photography project or shoot, or any inspiring story around it, and why?
My most memorable photography project has been a personal documentary shoot at a unique festival. Delhi’s Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah celebrates the Hindu festival of Basant Panchami every year because of the historical significance of the festival in Sufism. I created a photo documentary at this place back in the year 2022. The place is flooded with visitors and pilgrims who are all dressed in yellow or carry a piece of yellow with them.
What is your photography kit ? or we would say, what is in your camera bag?
My photography kit is pretty simple- a Nikon Z6ii and a 24-120 f4 lens. The kit is perfect for the genres that I shoot.
What advice would you give to photographers who are just starting out and looking to make a name for themselves?
My only advice for beginner photographers is to keep shooting. Whether you own a camera or not, you must still make sure to capture every moment that you believe is worth a photo. Never stop taking pictures thinking someone might judge you, it is you who those pictures belong to. And never join the rat race of being seen by many people. Your time will come and your work will find its right audience.
