Introducing 58Miles showcase photographer Subham Satpathy from Odisha

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got started in photography?

I come from a small smart city Rourkela, Odisha. Back in school days i used to go to an art school and have learnt art for 7 years but i always found it very difficult to complete most of my paintings as it takes a lot of time for me to finish one. When i was introduced to camera for the 1st time, I clicked an image of one of my friend. I realised I could click a single image and make a composition out of it very quickly i discovered later photoshop to play with colours and change edit and do various stuff this is how i got into photography as it was quick easy and can be completed in a single sitting.

What inspires your photography, and how do you choose your subjects or themes?

Colours, light and shadows and most importantly lines and composition which i have learnt during my art school which always helps me to choose the subject and themes , mostly i like landscape and portrait photography. But in commercial my approach is always about creating art out of the clients vision through the skills i have learnt in my art school days.

What has been your most memorable photography project or shoot, or any inspiring story around it, and why?

The most memorable photography project was very recent one as this year i went on my 1st international work project in thailand where i got a chance to visit a lot of historical and artisanal museum and interview a lot of art person where i got a chance to meet the royal thai silk weaver and also know about how it is weaved and different styles and it is all made of natural elements and nothing is machinery or chemical which was a very amazing experience to work with Amazing Thailand company and explore their culture. I started working full time in this field about 1 year back with a profit motive because now it was time to start earning money. This project for me was a gateway to a life where my profit motive and my personal passion and creativity combined. I don’t know how everything will unfold but I do now know that I have it in me to create the life I dream of.

What is your photography kit ? or we would say, what is in your camera bag?

My camera bag consists a very minimal kit i would say this is barely basic : Panasonic Lumix S5 ( full frame 33mp camera body) , 50 mm f1.8 and 20-60mm kit lens, ND filter, a polariser and also a hollyland lark m2 mic. But this camera bag changes project to project with different lights or panels depending.

What advice would you give to photographers who are just starting out and looking to make a name for themselves?

I would say you might have talent or you might not have, you are just interested but one thing that you should have is the skill to observe and notice things which others may not find angles that others might not look into frame your subject and think will some other photographer will take the same shot? Question your angles and help yourself create your own shot and also be unsatisfied with your work because the best shot is yet to be taken by you. if you don't have talent always keep in mind hardwork beats talent if talent doesn't work hard so keep working towards that best shot.
