Introducing 58Miles showcase photographer Anushka Kumari from Delhi
Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got started in photography?
I’m a mother to a 10-year-old son and married to a corporate professional, living in Dwarka, Delhi. Family is at the heart of my life, and I love spending time with them, whether it’s cooking, reading non-fiction books, or enjoying morning walks to stay fit. I also have a passion for traveling and exploring different cultures.
Professionally, I have a background in B. Pharma, but after stepping into the corporate world, I realized that it wasn’t my true calling. My photography journey began in 2015 when I discovered my passion for capturing life's fleeting moments. I trained under Dr. OP Sharma, a renowned figure in India’s photography teaching industry.
Initially, I started my baby and maternity photography service on a small scale, often traveling to clients’ homes for shoots. The love and appreciation from my clients encouraged me to keep honing my skills. Over the years, I’ve taken specialized training in baby and maternity photography from The Looney Lens in Mumbai and Ana Brandt from California, USA, as well as several online courses to continuously improve.
Today, I run a beautiful studio in Dwarka and have completed nearly 10 years in this profession with approximately 3,000 photoshoots to my name.
What inspires your photography, and how do you choose your subjects or themes?
At the heart of my photography is the desire to capture life’s most beautiful moments. The maternity phase is incredibly special for any expectant parents, and I strive to preserve the beauty of these moments in a way that they can cherish forever.
Each phase of a baby’s life is unique, and I love capturing these fleeting moments. From the newborn’s peaceful smiles during sleep to the playful curiosity of babies aged 5 to 9 months, every stage offers something special. I’ve created over 400 themes, giving my clients a wide range of options to choose from. While I offer curated themes, I also welcome clients' specific requests, creating personalized themes based on their vision.
What has been your most memorable photography project or shoot, and why?
Every project I undertake holds a special place in my heart because I immerse myself in the emotions and thoughts of the families I work with. However, the moments that stand out the most are when parents, after a long wait or under special circumstances, see their newborn in a beautiful setup. Witnessing their tears of joy as they view their baby’s photos is incredibly fulfilling and makes me feel complete.
What is in your camera bag?
I primarily use a Nikon D750 and a Sony Alpha III, choosing between the two based on the theme and desired color palette. Each brand has its unique strengths in terms of color output, which I leverage to achieve the best results. For lighting, I rely on a Godox AD 400 with a translucent umbrella. I do basic editing in Adobe Photoshop to ensure that every photo meets the highest standards.
What advice would you give to photographers just starting out and looking to make a name for themselves?
“People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing!” Find your Ikigai, and don't chase money—focus on your passion instead. If photography brings you joy, commit to consistently improving your skills and delivering the best to your clients. Treat every project as a learning opportunity and strive for daily improvement. Start with technical training in photography and camera work. Once you've found your specialty, seek out specialized training from qualified professionals and experiment with your craft.
