Introducing 58Miles showcase photographer Varun Tyagi from New Delhi

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got started in photography?

I studied Journalism and Mass communication after 12th where photography was one of my subjects. I received consistent appreciation and awards for my photography skills during college which shifted my interest completely into photography. I went to Jamia Millia Islamia for Post Graduation in Photography but dropped out because of lack of interest in the course structure. After dropping out I initiated fitness photography in India. My interest in fitness and photography made me initiate fitness photography.

What inspires your photography, and how do you choose your subjects or themes?

As a fitness photographer, I am likely inspired by the passion, dedication, and resilience of athletes and fitness enthusiasts. I might choose my subjects based on their unique stories, their commitment to fitness, and their ability to inspire others. Themes in my photography could revolve around strength, perseverance, and the journey towards physical and mental wellness. Capturing the raw emotion, intensity, and triumphs of my subjects can also be a significant source of inspiration for my work.

What has been your most memorable photography project or shoot, or any inspiring story around it, and why?

When I was 24 year old, I shot Actor Rahul Dev for a Gym equipment brand that turned out to be the most memorable for me because he was the first celebrity that I shot and I was given only 20 mins to capture the shoot. The amount of pressure that you face in a celebrity shoot is insane especially when you are very young and not so experienced. But I did justice to the given time and opportunity. Those photographs are placed over 100 gyms across India and still getting used. Such shoots have made me a more confident photographer.

What is your photography kit ? or we would say, what is in your camera bag?

Canon R5 and 6DM2 camera body with 24-70mm 2.8 Tamron g2 lens, 70-200mm 2.8 tamron G2 lens, Canon 50mm 1.8.  Godox Portable Speed Lights and Diffusers and extra batteries.
I keep a backup of every technical unit to avoid a technical mishap.

What advice would you give to photographers who are just starting out and looking to make a name for themselves?

Focus on learning the fundamentals of photography, including exposure, composition, and lighting. Understanding these basics is crucial for creating high-quality images. While you don't need the most expensive gear, invest in a reliable camera and a few versatile lenses. Quality equipment will help you produce better results and learn effectively. Start by shooting a variety of subjects to develop your skills and discover your niche. Curate your best work into a portfolio that showcases your style and abilities. Use social media, photography websites, and local exhibitions to share your work with a broader audience. Building an online presence is key to gaining recognition. Passion and persistence are crucial in the competitive field of photography. Stay dedicated to your craft, and don't be discouraged by setbacks. Keep pushing forward and refining your skills.
