Introducing 58Miles showcase photographer Raj Sarkar from Kolkata
Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got started in photography?
I, Raj Sarkar, am a Kolkata-based street photographer and educator who specializes in capturing fleeting moments and emotions with my camera. My dedication to street photography goes beyond personal enjoyment; I actively impart my knowledge through workshops and lectures at prestigious institutions such as IIM, St. Xavier's College, Don Bosco, and Union Chapel School. I show my dedication to the photography community by organizing exhibitions that highlight the talents of fellow photographers and by judging various photography competitions.
My technical skills are well-regarded, particularly for reviewing gadgets, with a special emphasis on Fujifilm X series cameras and lenses. I have received significant recognition from competitions like the International Pushkar Mela Contest, Garuda World Photo Contest, and HIPA. My globally showcased work is known for its authenticity and emotional impact. I also write insightful articles for esteemed publications such as Fujilove, Street Photography Magazine (USA), View Find, APF Magazine, Smart Photography, Better Photography, Asian Photography, Chiiz magazine, Saveus, 121 clicks, and National Geographic.
I began my photography journey in 1983 with an Agfa Click3 camera, using a 12-exposure film roll, and over time, I casually captured moments at weddings and family gatherings.
Recently, I was honored as an international Iconic Photographer representing India at the Retro Kolkata Magazine's International Photography Festival. My creative compositions also serve as valuable resources for aspiring photographers. As a passionate traveler, I am always on the lookout for new photographic opportunities around the world. My recent role as a judge at the Livorno Street Photography Festival in Italy (2023) highlights my respected status within the global photography community.
What inspires your photography, and how do you choose your subjects or themes?
Inspiration and Passion for Street Photography: I believe the universe is a vast teacher, a source of infinite inspiration. Street photography captivates me due to its candid and unpredictable nature. I'm drawn to capturing unique, often overlooked moments that evoke deep emotions. There's a profound connection between me as the photographer and my subjects. I also find humor in becoming the subject of my own photographs.
What has been your most memorable photography project or shoot, or any inspiring story around it, and why?
Involvement with Fujifilm as a Global Ambassador: I had the honor of reviewing pre-launched Fujifilm gear like the Xpro3 and 27mm 2.8 lens. This experience was significant because it allowed me to use cutting-edge equipment before it was available to the public. Fujifilm HQ and India officially published videos featuring my work with their gear.
What is your photography kit ? or we would say, what is in your camera bag?
I always carry two cameras (a Leica and Fujifilm), along with spare batteries, extra lenses, memory cards, cleaning cloth, and sometimes essentials like medicine, a towel, glucose, and chewing gum.
What advice would you give to photographers who are just starting out and looking to make a name for themselves?
I find the question about seeking name contradictory for newcomers in any career. Instead, I emphasize the importance of dedicating oneself to mastering the craft. I echo the sentiment from the movie "3 Idiots" about becoming capable, with success naturally following pursuit of excellence.
