Introducing 58Miles showcase photographer Geena Anoop from Bangalore
Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got started in photography?
During the pandemic in 2021, I developed a deep passion for birdwatching, captivated by the vibrant colors, delicate wings, and diverse species. This new world of discovery led me to explore photography, a journey that began with a camera gifted by my husband on our wedding anniversary. With each click, my fascination grew, and I started learning photography through YouTube and books. Over time, the camera became an extension of myself, seamlessly integrating into my life as I captured the beauty of the world around me. My background in finance and managing our architecture studio complements my creative pursuits, while my love for nature, even in its smallest details, continues to inspire my work as a wildlife photographer and cinematographer.
What inspires your photography, and how do you choose your subjects or themes?
Nature, in all its forms, has always been a source of inspiration for my photography, especially wildlife. I began by photographing birds around my home, but soon, my passion led me to safaris and jungle treks in search of wild animals. Among all the incredible creatures, elephants have become my favorite subject to capture.
What has been your most memorable photography project or shoot, or any inspiring story around it, and why?
One of my most unforgettable shoots took place at Kabini, Nagarhole Tiger Reserve, during my first tiger sighting. Unlike the usual signs from other animals, like alarm calls from langurs and deer, the jungle was unusually quiet. However, our naturalist sensed something, and we decided to wait. Out of nowhere, a tiger emerged, walking head-on towards us between the tall trees. That evening, during another safari, I was fortunate enough to photograph her cubs and another tiger as well. Seeing six tigers in one day was an extraordinary experience, especially as it marked my first encounter with these majestic creatures.
What is your photography kit ? or we would say, what is in your camera bag?
I am Canon shooter, I always carry my Canon R5 with a Canon RF 100-500mm lens in my bag.
What advice would you give to photographers who are just starting out and looking to make a name for themselves?
Not an advice, but, I would say my friends to love your subject first then photograph them. Try to say something to society through our photograph.
